HOW THE SHOW EVOLVED:

We’ve been doing our NJ Discover TV Show for three years. Each show has an origin, etiology, evolution but I never took the time to discuss in the promo article (which this is) how each show began and came together. But I must do it now; as I squint in the silvery light of the moon, stars and a passing asteroid in a perfect celestial benign alignment. Indeed, this show was meant to be with its provocative title, content and most importantly, special guests.

Last November I attended a comedy show at the Headliner Night Club produced by Matt Swartz. In between sets, he introduced me to his friend, Jackie Atkins and mentioned that she was in the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame. Being a consummate groupie, Jackie and I did a photo op. Her place in New Jersey history resonated with me for months, sensing she was ‘someone’ that would find a place at NJ Discover, after all, our mantra is to elevate and promulgate people and places of New Jersey. The notion of Jackie Atkins then resided in one of my cerebral storage units.

A month ago I received a Facebook message from Crystal Woods mentioning to me that she got my name from Tim Lucas, artist, also known as Dr. Sketchy. Crystal was looking for media coverage for an important American Natural Bodybuilding Federation event in September in Springfield. She had asked Tim if he knew any good central Jersey journalists. The names of Tara-Jean and Calvin Schwartz surfaced. Before responding to Crystal, I did some googling and Facebook research and to my amazement, I discovered how accomplished she is in bodybuilding. A few days later, we spoke and the bright bulb went off and I retrieved memory bits about Jackie and asked Crystal if she was interested in being a guest on NJ Discover LIVE. It happened right there on the spot. The alignment began.

Crystal was excited and aboard; so was Jackie a few days later. But it wasn’t until Tara-Jean and I went to visit Jackie at her Gleason’s gym, in Long Branch, that her incredible life’s journey crystallized. Tara-Jean and I looked at each other and we realized even more important than Jackie’s athletic prowess was her life’s meaning and accomplishment; certainly the ingredient of great television content. More celestial alignment followed when we went to see Crystal at Gold Medal Gym in Garwood. Almost Déjà vu for us, as Crystal shared her life; a brave, dedicated and difficult journey. Their stories will make for hugely unique television; far from the mundane and easily the stuff they make bio-movies about. Jacklyn Michelle Atkins, also known as “Coach Jackie” is a native “Jersey Girl”, born in Monmouth Medical, Long Branch, NJ and residing now in Neptune, NJ. Jacklyn Atkins graduated from Red Bank Catholic High School. It was here that she began to excel as an accomplished athlete, competing in gymnastics, track and field and martial arts. Her accomplishments in track and field earned her notoriety, scholarships and an induction into the NJ Track & Field Hall of Fame. Jackie set records in the 440 yard dash in both regional and national competitions. She also anchored the championship RBC mile relay team at the Penn Relays.

In addition to her loving parents, Grace & Joseph Atkins, her track coach, Jack Rafter played an important role in her developmental years. Rafter taught the fundamentals of elite training, hard work, dedication and removing all obstacles as his training ethic and rules for living. Jackie’s coaching style is modeled after Rafter’s teaching and she recites many of his mottos during training sessions with the youth attending her gym.

Jackie attended North Carolina State University& CUNY and pursued her Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. In 1982 she began her career in Software Development. During her professional career, Jackie always found time to volunteer teaching young athletes fitness, boxing and martial arts. In June 2012, Jackie retired after 28+ years of service from AT&T Bell Labs/Avaya as Executive Director of Research & Development. In her executive role, Jackie led global teams developing computer telephony software. Her team developed the first CTI application deployed in thousands of call center operations.

Jacklyn then stepped out on faith and pursued her passion – elevating & educating youth in boxing and in life. Jackie revived the Long Branch PAL Boxing program and introduced life skills and youth martial arts to the curriculum. Jackie partnered with Bruce Silverglade of Gleason’s Gym Brooklyn, to birth Gleason’s Gym Jersey Shore in Long Branch, NJ and Gleason’s boxing at the Mercedes Club in Manhattan. Atkins continues to house the PAL program in support of the community of Long Branch and has partnered with Long Branch Police department and Youth Services to serve at-risk youth. She recently birthed the New Jersey Give a Kid a Dream Program (NJGAKAD). The GAKAD program (www.njgakad.com) leverages the focus and discipline of boxing to engage at risk youth while supporting them with the challenges they face in today’s society. Jackie’s goal is for the youth to become CHAMPIONS of life… living a healthy, productive lifestyle inside and outside of the ring. As she has been given the opportunity to live life abundantly and achieve her goals, she truly believes every youth deserves the same chance…. Jackie fell in love with the sweet science during her teenage years while training at the Red Bank Police Athletic League. Her accomplishments in boxing and martial arts earned her the Women’s 152 lb. National Golden Gloves title, Ringside World Champion at 141 and 152 weight classes and Women’s 2004 NJ Kickboxing Amateur champion. Atkins retired from kickboxing competition undefeated after earning her black belt in Shodokan, training and elevating with Grandmaster Bill “Superfoot” Wallace.

Jackie paved the way for women to compete in boxing at the United States Military Academy at West Point. She coached the newly formed team for two years, winning the first USIBA National Collegiate Championships in April 2012. In her first year at West Point, the team won the team title in addition to winning 4 National Gold medals, 4 National Silver Medals and one bronze medal. In Atkins’ second year coaching the team, the West Point Women’s Boxing team repeated their prior year performance, winning the 2014 USIBA National Collegiate team championship and bringing home 4 Gold Medals, 3 Silver and 1 Bronze. Atkins traveled with the New Jersey State Championship team to the USA Nationals in 2011 and 2012 bringing home Gold, Silver and Bronze.

As head coach, Atkins’ led the Long Branch Boxing team to victory claiming the 2012 female 141 lb. Golden Glove Championship, three 2012 New Jersey State Championships, three 2012 NJ Diamond Glove Champions, two 2013 NJ State Champions & New Jersey Diamond Glove Champions titles and in 2014, winning the gold in the novice 123 lb. weight class NJ Diamond Glove & New Jersey State Championships.

Coach Jackie was recently elected to the position of President for the NJ Association of USA boxing, after serving two terms on the Executive Board. In 2014, Coach Jackie was inducted into the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame as Coach of the year. She is a nationally certified personal trainer, AIBA Star 1 Internationally accredited boxing coach, USA Boxing level 3 official and NJ State Athletic Board Inspector. Jackie recently completed Krav Maga International Instructor training certification in Tel Aviv, Israel in July 2014.

Jackie serves as President of the Lay Organization at Allen Chapel AME Church. She is the proud mother of two lovely daughters, Tynaya and Sade. Both girls have been very supportive of their mother and the many youths she has embraced over the years.

CRYSTAL WOODS:

I am a 42-year-old mother of two (ages 21 & 24) working full time as an RDA/CDA in private practice specializing in pediatrics and specials needs for the last 15 years and currently studying for my NSCA CPT. When I’m not at work I spend my time helping others reach their fitness goals both for health and stage as a posing coach and co-owner of Team Synergy and Science.

If you had asked me 5 years ago if I could imagine myself happily engrossed in a fit lifestyle I would have laughed. I was very sedentary in my lifestyle, work, home, and the occasional event. I was very much a homebody just uncomfortable with myself and life. Now I can’t imagine life any other way, I have more confidence than I ever did not just with my outward appearance, but in my abilities. Touching other people’s lives, educating and helping them to live better fills my heart and lets me know I found my purpose in life.

In 2012 I decided to quit smoking, disgusted with what I was doing to my health and the way my hair, car, and clothes smelled I quit cold turkey. In an effort to stay focused and not relapse as well as gain more weight as a result of quitting I joined a gym. I had been active as a kid, playing sports and as a young adult chasing after two small children, but a gym was something new to me and I admit intimidating. I started out on the cardio equipment, but wanted something challenging and I was hungry to learn. I started asking the manager/ head trainer questions that he was very happy to answer and excited that a woman was interested in weight lifting. I began to train six days a week, getting stronger and more confident in my ability. At 5″2 and 127 pounds my trainer saw potential as a competitor and after much contemplation I decided to enter my first figure competition, but first I had to focus on training and nutrition.

In September of 2012 after 8 months of hard training, quality nutrition (macros, iifym) and almost 30 pounds I took the stage and won my first figure competition.

Over the last five years I have competed in 20 stage competitions earning my figure and bikini procards in multiple organizations, and when in the off season I like to compete in powerlifting in the 114 weight class (NJ State powerlifting record holder with the USAPL and WNPF) . As a way to give back to an amazing sport I sit on the board of the ANBF (American Natural Bodybuilding Federation) and frequently judge for multiple organizations.

Its more than just competing, it’s the camaraderie in the gym, the support backstage, the community of likeminded people pushing one another to their best.

My nutrition is balanced for my goals as well as my mental health. I follow iifym (if it fits in your macros) adjusting choices depending whether I am in prep for a competition or off season trying to gain muscle.

I have no food allergies so there is no food group that I cut out of my diet and with a good metabolism even in my lowest deficit I am still able to enjoy most anything.

I always start my meals with a protein (chicken breast, ground turkey, lean steak, lean ground beef) and build my meals around that adding in carbs and fats. A typical day in prep looks like the following.

1 whole egg, 1 egg white on a flatbread
Greek yogurt
Salad with cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, ground turkey, fat free Italian dressing
Cottage cheese and blackberries
Roasted red pepper Quinoa and lean ground beef
Banana
Turkey pepperoni, low fat sharp cheddar
English muffin with peanut butter
Gallon of water daily

Tracking my macros and following iifym allows me variety, flexibility, and more importantly allows me to still be able to enjoy time with family and friends for special occasions or at an event. As the saying goes “give a man a fish you feed him for a day, teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” After finding a fit lifestyle I now know how to eat for life not just for a moment.

When I am in my off-season the goal shifts from leaning out to giving the body a rest from being in a deficit and to gain muscle. This also provides a much needed mental break from the rigors of competition and constantly tracking to a laxer nutrition regimen. Preparing my food daily does not change and quality foods are still a must, however, what changes is the constant weighing of food gives way to eyeballing and if I fancy a small slice of cake at a party I allow myself the indulgence. The key is to find that ideal off-season weight, eating slightly above maintenance in conjunction with a good strength training program.

Three tips for newbies:

Patience- there is a learning curve to meal prepping in the beginning, especially if you’re tracking macros, as with anything you will get better and quicker with practice.
Variety- three benefits
Vital nutrients you would otherwise miss
Maintaining a good relationship with food.
Allows better adherence for long term lifestyle goals.
Preplan – The most time-consuming part of meal prep is protein. Have multiple protein sources pre-cooked for the week making each day quicker and easier.

Top 3 tips for losing weight:

Constancy is the key to success, in your training and nutrition.
Follow a good strength training program, building muscle increases metabolism.
A caloric deficit is required to lose weight, as you reduce calories you may have a moment of weakness and indulge. Being human is ok, but don’t let that one indulgence derails your mindset. You can recover from a splurge by getting right back to it. Stay the course and you will succeed.

We don’t all start our journeys from the same place and our reasons for beginning are all different. Remember to always enjoy the process of learning and changing and never compare your journey to another person. This is an amazing life and living fit allows us to extend it to the fullest with quality.

Most folks who know me these past five journalistic years, are well aware of the 24/7 nature of my wearing a Rutgers cap. It’s a terrifically long story which began 21 years ago when I “re-discovered” my alma mater with my son Neil at our first Rutgers football game. Not to be trite, but the rest is history. I’ve come to realize the importance of education in our world and how a university helps one through the real formative years of college education. I’m also aware of the evolution/ contemporary marriage of athletics and academia.

The exigencies of life bring me to Rutgers campus some 70 times a year. Two weeks ago, I sat on a panel for Communication and Media students. Just the other day, I was at a lecture and book signing with American freedom icon, Civil Rights Activist Congressman John Lewis. I pinched myself being on campus and absorbing Lewis’ words. But it’s really any college campus which excites and stimulates me as a citizen first and journalist.

I love the purity of college sports and have become that tailgating, multi-sport alum. After that first football game, my son asked me, “Dad, can we come to more games next year?” I do suffer from some obsessive-compulsive tendencies so the following year I got season tickets for Football, Basketball which later morphed into Women’s Basketball, Wrestling, Women ‘s Soccer, Lacrosse and an almost appearance at a Quidditch match (The Harry Potter stuff).

The point of these few paragraphs is to dramatize my involvement with Rutgers athletics so when Pat Hobbs came aboard in 2015, I was thrilled beyond with the opportunity for growth, Big Ten navigation and the infusion of his special spirit and energy. It was all self-evident in Pat’s first few hours on the banks of the Raritan. We knew that Pat was going to guide this ship purposefully through the waters of Big Ten competition. And that’s exactly what’s he’s doing with finesse, energy, dedication and a 24/7 commitment. I marvel at Pat Hobb’s omnipresence and persona. You’ll see below some demonstrative pictures of the confirmation of this statement.

So here it is January 28^th 2017 at Madison Square Garden for the Rutgers -Wisconsin basketball game, carrying with it national implications. I was with my Weequahic High School buddy Dr. Michael Kerner at a pre-game event on 36^th Street which Pat Hobbs attended. Thinking to myself, I’ve got nothing to lose, I went over to Pat and invited him to be a special guest on NJ Discover LIVE TV Show. There was an immediate, “Yes.” I’ve been working these past months with Ryan Pisarri, Chief of Staff, Division of Intercollegiate Athletics. At NJ Discover, our mantra is uniqueness in elevating the people and places of New Jersey. And this is the show you’ll see on Monday. And so it goes.

A New Jersey native with over 20 years of leadership experience in higher education and public service, Patrick Hobbs serves as the Director of Athletics at Rutgers University.

Hobbs joined the Scarlet Knights on Nov. 29, 2015, moving south down the New Jersey Turnpike after notable achievements at Seton Hall University. He served as Dean at the Seton Hall School of Law from 1999 to 2015 and oversaw the Department of Athletics for the Pirates from 2009 to 2011.

“There is no question about the opportunity at Rutgers,” Hobbs said at his introductory press conference. “New Jersey is a special place. This is New Jersey’s university.”

Hobbs stated that his first priority was to hire a football coach to lead young men and to serve as an ambassador for Rutgers University. Just eight days after his hire, he announced Chris Ash as the 30th head coach in the 146-year history of the program. Ash arrived with nearly two decades of collegiate coaching experience, including five years in the Big Ten Conference (four as a defensive coordinator) with four B1G Championships.

“Chris is absolutely the right coach at the right time for Rutgers football,” Hobbs said. “He brings with him a national reputation for his coaching and recruiting abilities and, more importantly, for his character and leadership.”

The positive momentum established during the fall semester continued to bloom in the spring. Hobbs restructured Athletics leadership to enhance communication, improve resource allocation and to enrich customer service and the game day experience. This new leadership is charged with developing a comprehensive strategic plan that will communicate a defined vision for Rutgers Athletics.

On March 22, Steve Pikiell, the 2016 America East Conference Coach of the Year who led Stony Brook to six post-season appearances over the past seven years, was introduced by Hobbs as the 19th head coach in the history of Rutgers men’s basketball. A two-time team captain under Jim Calhoun at Connecticut, he arrived with 25 years of coaching experience, including the past 11 seasons as head coach of the Seawolves.

“Everywhere Steve has been, he’s won,” said Hobbs. “But most impressive, is that everywhere he’s been, they started at the bottom and rose to the top. He will bring that same dedication and energy to build a successful program at Rutgers.”

A media conference on May 10 further reinforced the positive trajectory of Rutgers Athletics under Hobbs. “R B1G Build,” a comprehensive campaign launched to raise $100 million for new or upgraded facilities, had surpassed the $50 million milestone in just 15 weeks. The initiative was boosted 10 donations of more than $1 million during that span, including the three largest gifts in Rutgers Athletics history, which combined to exceed $11 million.

“This generous support will help meet critical needs for our student-athletes to successfully compete in the nation’s premier academic and athletic conference,” said Hobbs. “Having supporters who not only understand what it takes to compete on an elite level, but provide the resources to help lead us there, is integral to our success.”

When the 2015-16 season came to a close, the achievements, both on the field and in the classroom, were unmistakable. Rutgers was one of just two universities to have its men’s and women’s soccer, wrestling and men’s lacrosse programs all nationally-ranked. RU student-athletes combined to win 16 Big Ten Players of the Year honors and individual championships. In addition, Scarlet Knights earned 17 All-America and 46 All-Big Ten honors. These accomplishments were available for the world to see, as 279 competitions were televised or streamed, including 90 televised on national linear networks.

Rutgers had 228 student-athletes recognized as Academic All-Big Ten, an increase from 196 in 2014-15. RU also boasted 72 Big Ten Distinguished Scholars with cumulative grade point averages of 3.7 or better, an increase from 54 the prior year. In between their athletic and academic achievements, Rutgers student-athletes performed more than 3,500 hours of community service in 2015-16.

Prior to joining Rutgers, Hobbs also worked for New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. In April 2014, he was appointed Ombudsman to the Office of the Governor, serving as a resource for whistleblowers within the Office. He also oversaw ethics training and guidance to the 140 employees in the Office of the Governor.

As the Interim Director of Athletics at Seton Hall, Hobbs assumed supervision of the department and led searches for men’s and women’s basketball head coaches. He also conducted the search for and hiring of a permanent athletic director and added the sport of women’s golf, which earned two Big East titles in the last five years. Another major accomplishment was negotiating a contract with the Prudential Center as a home site for men’s basketball games.

Hobbs joined the Seton Hall Law faculty in 1990 with a specialty in tax law; he became Associate Dean for Finance in 1995 and was named Dean in 1999. In his years as Dean, Hobbs shepherded the Law School through a series of groundbreaking initiatives that raised Seton Hall Law to unprecedented prominence. The school was the fastest-rising law school in the U.S. News & World Report ranking over the past decade. One of the highlights includes the Health Law program, which is consistently ranked among the top 10 nationally. Seton Hall Law boasts a faculty that is world-renowned in such diverse areas as intellectual property, social justice, corporate bankruptcy, national security policy and employment law.

Hobbs was influential in fundraising at Seton Hall Law by spearheading the $25 million plus campaign, Seton Hall Law Rising, the school’s largest fundraising initiative. Part of the success stemmed from revitalizing alumni support with over 70 percent contributing during the campaign.

During his tenure, Hobbs established several centers of excellence: The Center for Health & Pharmaceutical Law & Policy; the Center for Policy and Research; and the Gibbons Institute of Law, Science & Technology. Under his leadership, Seton Hall Law achieved worldwide prominence through a series of groundbreaking initiatives emanating from the school’s social justice mission.

Hobbs advocated for the growth of the Seton Hall Law Center for Social Justice, offering clinical programs with students and professors taking on cases addressing predatory lending, domestic violence, international human rights, and education and housing policy reform.

In 2006, Seton Hall became the education partner of the New Jersey Law and Education Empowerment Project (NJ LEEP). The mission of the Project is to introduce economically disadvantaged students from 8th to 12th grade to the legal profession and to strengthen their academic skills. Since the graduation of the first NJ LEEP cohort in 2011, the program has achieved a 100 percent college acceptance rate among its participants, with several admitted to the nation’s top-tier universities.

The Garden State product has been dedicated to fostering greater diversity in the legal profession. In 2008, he formed the Dean’s Diversity Council, comprising faculty, students, alumni and administration working in concert to enhance the Law School’s inclusive environment. In 2012, Professor Hobbs was honored by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund with its Excellence Award for his work on behalf of diversity within the legal profession and for “exemplifying Justice Thurgood Marshall’s commitment to justice, civil rights and education.”

Hobbs is a former member of the Standards Review Committee of the American Bar Association, Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar and has twice chaired the Law School Development Committee. He also serves as a member of the boards of the Newark Alliance and Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Additionally, he served as a member of the Advisory Board of Lexis-Nexis, the New Jersey Commission of Professionalism and the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education. In 2004, he served as Chair of the Newark, New Jersey Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Commission on the Downtown Core Redevelopment, a key initiative driving Newark’s resurgence and which led the way for the construction of the Prudential Center entertainment arena.

A member of the New Jersey State Commission of Investigation from 2004-14, Hobbs chaired the Commission for the last four years of his tenure. The independent, bipartisan law enforcement body originally conceived in 1968 as a fact-finding agency whose mission is to expose organized crime, public corruption, and waste and to recommend reforms in the service of the citizens of New Jersey.

Prior to joining Seton Hall Law, Hobbs was a tax attorney with the law firm of Shanley & Fisher in Roseland, N.J. He received his B.A. in accounting, magna cum laude, from Seton Hall University, his J.D. from the University of North Carolina and his LL.M. (in taxation) from New York University.

It has long been our mantra at NJ Discover to elevate and promote the people and places of New Jersey. We like to think of ourselves as a positive force in the universe. We’ve grown these past six years from being an amazing full service video production company to also a specialized feature news entity fulfilling our mantra and these last few years also becoming a radio and cable TV Live show with an ever expanding audience in New Jersey.

FRANKE PREVITE:

He was born and raised in New Brunswick, New Jersey to Franke Previte, Sr., an opera singer.

Franke was with the New Jersey rock quintet Franke and the Knockouts as the singer and songwriter. Previously he had sung with the Oxford Watch Band and the heavy metal band Bull Angus. Franke and the Knockouts were signed by Millennium Records in 1981 and had three U.S. Top 40 singles and two Top 50 albums. Franke and the Knockouts’ biggest single, “Sweetheart”, was written by Previte and Knockout guitarist Billy Elworthy and became a Top 10 hit in 1981. The group’s other two Top 40 hits were “You’re My Girl” and “Without You (Not Another Lonely Night)”. The band switched to Music Corporation of America in 1984, but they split up around 1986. Franke Previte co-wrote music for the hit soundtrack to the 1987 movie Dirty Dancing.

Franke won the Academy Award for Best Achievement in Music; Best Song for 1987 for Dirty Dancing’s “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” with co-composers John DeNicola and Donald Markowitz.

That same year Previte also received a Golden Globe and a Grammy nomination. Also the song (I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life won the ASCAP song of the year award. And recently the song was chosen as ASCAP top 20 songs ever written, landing at number 15. Franke also was chosen as one of America’s top 25 songwriters to represent the USA in a songwriter summit in the USSR. Today Franke helps raise money for the charity THE PANCREATIC CANCER ACTION NETWORK in Patrick Swayze’s honor. He continues to raise money for the charity with his new band, THE BROTHERHOOD. Franks says ” If you’re a songwriter then you’re in the Brotherhood.”

In 1999 Arlan was recruited by award winning composer Stephen Trask to be the first to play his role as The Music Director, Skshp, in the first touring company of the Glam Rock Off Broadway hit show “Hedwig and The Angry Inch”. Arlan then went on to record two solo albums with the help of legendary Miami Producer Frank “Rat Bastard “ Falestra. Evolution means how it came about. With our upcoming special Neo-Latino artist themed show, it was a few blinks of an eye, a gaze to a painting on a wall followed by a conversation with the curator, Monica Camin, of the exhibit Neo-Latino: Critical Mass now showing at Monmouth Museum (Brookdale College) until November 6^th.

When I was at the Monmouth Museum researching emerging artist, Dion Hitchings, Laura Alexander, museum public relations, suggested I glance at the setting up of their new feature exhibit “Neo Latino: Critical Mass.” As I walked into the exhibit, I first saw artist Ricardo Fonseca’s “An Act of Love-Trumpet.” It was mesmerizing, relevant, cerebral and fascinating. I was captivated with all the art in the exhibit. Then I accepted an invitation to attend the opening reception on September 16^th. I love saying, “the rest is history.”

Prior to the reception, I sat down, as an interviewing journalist, in the museum garden, for an hour, with four of the artists, Raul Villarreal, who coined the term ‘Neo-Latino,” Monica Camin, exhibit curator, Olga Bautista and Professor Jose Rodeiro. The collective of artists representing at this exhibit is ground-breaking. It was explained that 2016 is a crucial year for the Latino voice, especially in this year’s ‘relevant’ election. The art in the exhibit is so expressive of the cultural and socio/political Latino experience. The artists featured have roots or ties to Argentina, Columbia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, Portugal and Spain.

That light bulb of clarity, relevant and grasp suddenly went off in my vision. I’ve been on this mission to explore the exigencies of educating people. I was on that mountain top, seeing clearly, but not quite forever, and knew N J Discover could get involved in telling their story and exploring their art. The moment I suggested doing an NJ Discover TV LIVE TV Show, it was one of those simultaneous group moments of clarified vision. We all saw the light and possibilities to further bring awareness/ presence and voice of Latinos in the arts to mainstream. It’s a journey to education and understanding.

As an Argentine born, New Jersey and Texas-based artist, I experienced my upbringing in Latin America as a first generation Argentine. In the work presented here I examine my roots as the daughter of German-Jews who escaped the worst years of the Holocaust and found refuge in Argentina. The questions I explore in much of my work straddle the experiences of being brought up as the daughter of immigrants in Latin America and the experiences of personal immigration and identity in my adulthood as I emigrated to Israel and then the United States.

While the catalysts for the movement between countries differ vastly, the commonality that ensues is that the culture and communities that so strongly shape our identity and understanding of the world in which we live are uprooted, causing us to seek out and reinvent the stories that make us whole. I sift through my ancestral stories in order to connect to those roots that have been torn from their origins and to remember and pass on the stories of a living history whose survivors are aging.

DESCRIPTION OF REPRESENTED ART: Between the years of 1976 and 1983, Argentina was governed by military rule steeped in austerity and cultural genocide. Leaders of the military dictatorship called this the “National Reorganization Process,” but the people called it “The Dirty War.”

During this time, the economy was in chaos, jobs were not available, poverty was growing, and human rights were ignored. Individuals who were considered a political or ideological threat to the military- largely young people fighting for social change- were abducted, imprisoned, tortured, and killed. One method of torture was called the “Flight of Death”- victims were injected with a fatal substance and thrown from an airplane.

30,000 people- known as los desaparecidos- disappeared during this war. An estimated 500 babies born in captivity were given up for adoption, and left with no real identity.

PERPETUALLY SETTLING DUST (EL REZO) is both a meditation on the repeated atrocities of state terrorism and a prayer for a different future.

The piece was created in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The embroidery of the names was a call to the community, a call which was responded to immediately by the young people in the community and by the relatives of the desaparecidos.

Jose Rodeiro was born in February, 1949 and was raised in Ybor City, Tampa, Florida. Rodeiro’s ancestry is Cuban-American. Rodeiro received his BA in Studio Art from the University of Tampa; and his M.F.A from the Pratt Institute in New York City (NY) and his Ph.D. from the College of Fine Arts at Ohio University, Athens (Ohio). Rodeiro is a former Professor of Art and Art History and a former-Coordinator of Art History at New Jersey City University. Jersey City, NJ. His academic/artistic awards include a Visual Artist’s Fellowship in Painting from the National Endowment for the Arts (1986-1987), a Fulbright Fellowship (as a Fulbright Scholar in Nicaragua) (1995), and a Cintas Fellowship in Painting (1982). Rodeiro has received major public art (mural) commissions from Tampa Arts Councils, Tampa, FL, and Maryland State Arts Council, Baltimore, MD. He has lived and worked in Spain and Central America. Nationally and internationally, he has exhibited in scores of acclaimed art exhibitions and his art is included within significant art museums, art institutions, and art collections.

ICONOLOGY:

In early fall, 1890, during a friendly Bath Beach, Brooklyn, NY, excursion, José Martí entertained his goddaughter María Mantilla and her mother, Mrs. Carmen Miyares de Mantilla. Clearly visible, in the distance, are Admiral Giovanni da Verrazano’s “Narrows” (which were first discovered by the Florentine in 1524). However, because it was not completed until 1964, missing from the background’s calm Neo-Luminist seascape is the Verrazano Narrows Bridge. Meanwhile in the forefront, all three figures and their picnic luncheon are shielded from Bath Beach’s sandy-dirt by a woven brown Dutch carpet, symbolizing Jan Rodrigues’s 1613 first Dutch settlement in the area, which became New Amsterdam (eventually New York City). Held by Martí is the young child María Mantilla (a US-born citizen), who waves undersized Cuban and American flags that catch a brisk headwind, causing straw hats to be held tightly. With a Masonic pin on his lapel, Martí sits on a portable metallic stool, dutifully embracing his goddaughter Maria Mantilla, who is the future mother of Cesar Romero Jr., the acclaimed Hollywood actor, who played the iconic DC Comics’ role of “The Joker” (from 1966-68) on the “Batman” television show. Via Amnesis aesthetic theory, hiding behind a picnic basket, between two Cuban breads, a string-puppet of “The Joker” is held by Mrs. Carmen Miyares de Mantilla (the grandmother of Cesar Romero Jr. aka “The Joker”). Carmen Miyares de Mantilla wears a lace mantilla, a visual-pun on her late-husband’s name: Manuel Mantilla, who had died in 1885. Her mantilla is clasped by a cameo-broach depicting a white rose signifying Martí’s famous poem about friendship “Cultivo una rosa blanca.”

Around and in the picnic basket are typical Cuban foods as well as a bottle of dark Cuban rum. The mysterious and menacing Atlantic Ocean connects Bath Beach to Cuba, as does the blue rubber kickball on which Carmen Miyares de Mantilla rests her right-elbow, which contains a green geographical image of Cuba.

Ricardo Fonseca has been a graphic designer for more than 20 years. He earned his MFA from New Jersey City University (Jersey City, NJ) and his BFA from William Paterson University (Wayne, NJ). He has been a graphic/web designer and photographer at Kean University (Union, NJ) for more than 12 years. He received design awards from the Arts Directors Club of New Jersey (ADCNJ) in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Green Card is an artwork that explores the topic of identity, and how that identity relates to the individual and mass society in the United States. The artwork is a reflection of this most precious legal document, which has been reproduced to a colossal size, and easily appropriated with the use of a smartphone camera, to be replicated effortlessly, infinitely, and in real time; and possibly shareable through very public means, such as social media. Each person that steps up to the mirror in Green Card, is actually reflecting back his or her own situation and journey. But, it’s also an artwork of empathy, perseverance, and opportunity.

.Colombian-American sculptor Olga Mercedes Bautista has been awarded several certificates of appreciation from the mayors of Newark, Jersey City and Perth Amboy. She worked for the city of Perth Amboy as a Founder-Director of the Perth Amboy Gallery, as a curator of art exhibitions, organizer of the Festival of the Andes and art shows in the city for which she was in charge in securing grants. After receiving a Master in Fine Arts Education from Kean University, she became an art teacher at the Perth Amboy Education Center. Bautista has held this position for the past 17 years. Currently she is candidate for a Fine Arts Master degree from New Jersey City University

REPRESENTED ART: OLGA MERCEDES BAUTISTA “EL DORADO PROJECT”

“More than 113,000 trees were damaged or destroyed in the state of New Jersey two years ago due to severe winds and waves from Hurricane Sandy. Small branches, roots, and leaves among other debris were found scattered around through out the coastal area. Once the storm strong winds dissipated, organic materials could be found all around. They were laying on the beach sand after all the devastation.

A Colombian-American artist got inspired to make good use of those organic materials which although detached from their roots by mother nature were still blending in their new environment. She would assure us that those organic materials continued their own transformational process long after. In her own sculptures the artist tried to bring about an acute sensibility to the nature of the materials with which she worked. She wanted to show each minimal detail as if viewed under a microscope. Respecting their natural forms as she blended them together to combine raw materials of a variety of sources.

The viewer may recognize patterns and compositional elements in a new familiar form. Her sculptures intent to generate an appreciation and respect for a natural balance of nature”

Dominican-American artist born 1974 in Manhattan, NY.

In October Ms. Morel will participate in “Raw Forms Forum” curated by Artist Dominique Duroseau, Newark Museum, Newark NJ and exhibit in the group show “Accumulating Experience” curated by Betty Jarvis, Newark NJ 2016. Currently her work is included in the Neo-Latino group exhibit ”Critical Mass” Monmouth Museum, NJ. This past summer, Ms. Morel was awarded the First Sustainable Arts Fellow Residency, Gallery Aferro, Newark, NJ, 2016 and participated in the “Perspectives3” exhibits and workshops at Nurture Nature Center Easton, PA. She also co performed “Run to Your Friend Until You Can’t Anymore” an endurance performance with performance artist Ayana Evans 2016. Ms. Morel exhibited in the “I Kan Do Dat” exhibit curated by Daniel Simmons and Oshune Layne, Skylight gallery Brooklyn, NY. In 2012 /2013 she was invited by artist Gregory Coates of Fuse Art Infrastructure to participate in experimental installations in Allentown, PA.

Ms. Morel was awarded the Artist in Residence at Soho20 Chelsea Gallery, NY in 2012. I am a painter/digital artist working in New York City. I received a state scholarship to attend Rutgers University where I was awarded a bachelors degree. I completed my graduate studies in fine art at Hunter College in Manhattan. I received a Robert Smithson Scholarship to attend the Brooklyn Museum School of Art where I studied sculpture in between obtaining my degrees. I am a Fulbright Fellow, a recipient of numerous awards. The Nohra Haime Gallery in NYC has represented my paintings for fourteen years now and recently I have began to show my digital work at the Gallery Boreas in Brooklyn. My artwork is in numerous shows yearly throughout the world and is in public and private collections worldwide. And it has been widely written about frequently in magazines, newspapers and stock literature including for example The New York Times, Art in America and Nexus Art. I am an Associate Professor at New Jersey City University and a painting instructor at The Art Students League of New York.

Our annual Labor Day Weekend festival moves from its long-time home at Allaire State Park to the beautiful and spacious Horse Park of NJ in Allentown, September 3-4 from noon to 5 p.m. The rain date is Monday, Sept. 5.
