I met Jackie Atkins a few years ago at a benefit comedy concert in Neptune. When we were introduced, it was mentioned she was an inductee into the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame. Of course, that resonated with me, and a year later, when the opportunity manifested, I contacted her to be a guest on our NJ Discover Live TV Show along with Crystal Woods, an award-winning body builder and life-style coach. Two award winning women in sports not usually associated with women. That made for a fascinating TV Show.

I’ve been to her Gleason’s gym in Long Branch (for kids) and even went into the ring with her, mostly for the photo-op. She continues to be a glowing inspiration not only to me but to the legions of kids in Monmouth County who train and learn about life with her. Her New Jersey Give a Kid a Dream promotes “TURNING OUR MOST VULNERABLE NEW JERSEY YOUTH INTO CHAMPIONS OF LIFE.”

Last year was the very first Battle on the Beach. Due to inclement weather it was held at a local gym. I attended and it was a mind expansive experience to see the depth of involvement of kids and the community engaged in boxing and learning about life. This year is the second Battle on the Beach. A real beach in Long Branch. The New Jersey Give a Kid a Dream is such a great cause. Please consider coming down and or supporting!!

Jackie Atkin, founder

Jackie Atkins, Founder

Though she blushes at the number of Coach of the Year awards or her induction into the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame, Jacklyn developed a reputation for being a miracle worker with her fighters, such as founding the competitive women’s boxing program at West Point Academy. Learning boxing from an early age with the New Jersey Police Athletic League, Jackie became fluent in multiple fighting styles in addition to serving as a development executive at AT&T.

Matter-of-fact excellence is Jacklyn’s norm; through her work with Give a Kid a Dream, she’s also began to be as recognized as a child advocate, including winning the Tony Dowling Child Advocacy Award in 2016.

“I believe these kids needed someone passionate about them and needed someone that would fight for them, and beside their family, whether that’s one parent or two, or grandparents,” Jackie says. “In boxing, I can enter a ring and perhaps I’ll win, or perhaps not. But when it comes to these kids, losing is not an option.”
