HOW THIS TV SHOW EVOLVED
Almost as interesting as the guest’s stories is how the working parts to the production of this show came about. Cut to September; I attended the Women’s Health Institute at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (I’m on the Advisory Committee) clinical research lecture on female athlete concussions presented by Katherine Holmes, a Princeton graduate in neuro-science AND an US Olympic Fencer (2016) and in training for the 2020 Olympics. The lecture (her research) fascinated and intrigued. My favorite (awareness, epiphany) light bulb goes off. What a great guest for NJ Discover TV. Kat Holmes liked the idea.
Next to find a co-guest. A long winding road. Not intersecting with much success. Innocently, a week a week ago I attended the “Black VC Week: Millions in My 20’s -MVP Launch” Networking event in part sponsored by Rutgers Business School and Newark Venture Partners and past guests on NJ Discover TV, Chisa Egbelu and Kayla Jackson, founders of PeduL . As always, I was wearing my Rutgers hat. Ashu Jain approached; he was a Michigan grad (Engineering) and Rutgers was playing #4 ranked Michigan on Saturday. As per networking protocol, we exchanged business cards. A few days later, the same light bulb, after I connected with Ashu on Linked-In; his involvement with the Olympics and table tennis. What synchronicity in the universe! Katherine Holmes an Olympian and Ashu Jain, an Olympic committee advisor. AND their work in parallel worlds of health. A perfect, fascinating NJ Discover TV Show. Far from the ordinary and mind expansive. “Female Athlete and Concussion” by Katherine Holmes. Advising Olympic Committees & Energy By Ashu Jain. TUNE IN

“Then, there was the researcher, scientist, recent Princeton neuro-science graduate, AND Olympic Athlete (2016), TEAM USA Fencing Team, anticipating 2020 Olympics, Katherine Holmes, who was conducting the lecture along with her Princeton University mentor, Dr. Annegret Dettwiler”
“Katherine (Kat) trains eight hours a day for the Olympics where fencing was one of the first sports to be included. Gantner asked if she had a sword with her. Moments later, a complete demonstration with equipment, including the helmet which is actually bullet proof. Kat competes in Eppe fencing, where you can hit the opponent anywhere on the body. Gantner delighted me, when he asked practical considerations like travelling on airplanes with equipment (swords). Things you don’t ponder.”
“The lecture was organized by Dr. Gloria Bachmann, Director of Women’s Health Institute and attended by a few dozen physicians, scientists, professors, Middlesex County Arts & History, Diversity and Inclusion Leader, Rutgers Targum reporter, and NJ Discover(me).”
Katherine Holmes left for Estonia last week and is competing in a World Competition. Calvin Schwartz November 12th 2018

ASHU JAIN and ONGO SPRAYS
“ONGO Sprays is creating new and exciting ways in which functional products are consumed. Our first product is ENERGY’S NEXT BIG THING: ONGO energy spray. ONGO (short for on-the-go) is a portable, on demand energy spray that packs almost 20 Red Bulls into one small bottle. This bottle goes where you go, fits in your pocket or glove compartment, and will give you the fastest energy boost you’ve ever experienced. Best of all, you control the boost. Need just a little? Take 1 spray. 2 sprays is a small coffee. 3, a Red Bull. Need more? Take more – although we don’t recommend more than 4 sprays (sprays penetrate the body faster than drinking).
This product is intended to improve the productivity for an average working person. Imagine not having to wait in line for a coffee, or stopping for a refrigerated energy drink. Imagine having this spray by your side to take the minute you need a lift. In our trials, the average person felt a boost in as little as 3 minutes. And because of the way it’s made, it’s also about ½ the cost of its alternatives. Finally, the product is made with Natural caffeine, Vitamins b3, b6, b12, and Taurine and is sugar-free.”

NEWARK – AJ Jain is a world-class table tennis player who studied engineering at the University of Michigan and helped guide his family’s furniture business through the Great Recession.
But his task on a recent day was one of his greatest challenges yet: Convince venture capitalists to invest in Middletown-based Ongo Energy Spray, a product he is developing to give a quick jolt to the exhausted masses.
“I’m getting a chance to tell my story,” Jain said, taking a break from rapid-fire meetings with investors. “I’ve had some really good reactions. I’ve had some bad reactions. I shouldn’t say I’ve had any bad reactions. The only negative reaction I’ve had is, ‘This is not our space, good luck.’”
Jain was one of nearly two dozen New Jersey entrepreneurs who pitched ideas to investors at Founders & Funders, a bi-annual event sponsored by the state Economic Development Authority.
The high-stakes meet-up at Newark Venture Partners here was timely. Reports began to emerge that Amazon wouldn’t place its second headquarters in Newark, depriving the state of the benefits of a massive corporate expansion.
Gov. Phil Murphy, who attended the event, downplayed the state’s chances at landing Amazon and said its time for New Jersey to become innovative again by fostering smaller companies that might not have name recognition, but have the potential to grow faster.
He alluded to hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, who liked to say the secret to his success was skating to where the puck wasn’t.
“We had a state living in the old economy,” Murphy said. “We’ll never achieve our aspirations unless we go to where the puck is going.”
